For our senior design project, my team was tasked with designing and building a location controlled platform to hold a navigation and sensing system for an unmanned underwater vehicle.
The design requirements and constraints were as follows:
Platform must maintain a set location on the surface of the water within a set tolerance of 0.6m.
Platform must be operable in calm environments with wind speeds under 5mph.
Platform operating time of 1 hour.
Total platform mass must not exceed 13.6 Kg (30 lbs)
After much deliberation, my team settled on a cylindrical model for the platform. After designing and performing structural analysis and flow simulations on the CAD model, we 3d printed most of the parts, and assembled the platform for testing.
